MBA Thoughts

As many of you know, I am working on my MBA from Liberty University.  While online, this MBA degree is no joke.  At times, the work is absolutely kicking my tail.  I am getting the degree to improve as a leader and manager.  I have benefited immensely from the study and work.  Unfortunately, seminary does not prepare pastors well enough to lead churches. Seminary helps prepare pastors for preaching, teaching, studying or counseling. However, many of the necessary business and leadership principles a pastor needs to have are simply not imparted through seminary.  That is why I am getting my MBA, to help me become more well-rounded and better equipped to be the best leader for RiverTown I can possibly be. RiverTown Recap | 7.12.09

Here is a look at what's happening and what's coming at RiverTown Church: 

What’s Happening
We had a great Sunday this week for a middle of July weekend. There is a lot of excitement and momentum right now at RiverTown. Anytime you can get that in the middle of the summer, it is a very good thing. We had several first time guests this week. That is always exciting.

There is a sense of expectancy about what God is going to do this next school year. In the midst of a troubled and difficult economy, God is providing and creating an anticipation of things to come. Look each day in faith to God as your Provider. Also, look for ways that you can be generous and invest in what truly matters. If you have fallen behind on your giving, look for a way to catch up on your giving to what God is doing through our church. Remember, as we put God first in our giving, He promises to bless us and meet our needs.

Life change is happening at RiverTown, and folks are meeting Christ for the first time . . . or meeting Him again for the first time in a while. As you come to worship each Sunday, take the initiative to meet all the new folks God is bringing to RiverTown each week. God is bringing some really great people to be part of our church.

Plans are being made to revitalize our Small Groups as we look towards the fall. Currently we have eight small groups (6 co-ed and 2 gender specific). As we look towards the fall we plan to have 10 plus groups meeting to fuel fellowship, community and discipleship at RiverTown.

Exciting changes are coming in terms of vision clarity and administrative streamlining. I am getting pumped about our lead, staff and volunteer teams having more focused roles this year.

What’s Coming

Be excited about what God is doing in our church. God is going to use us this next year in exciting ways. Pray each day for our church and our ministry leaders. Look with faith and anticipation to each Sunday believing God to do great things. This next year is going to be a fun ride at RiverTown. Look for ways to get involved, and to be a part of what God is doing.

This next Sunday starts our new series, "Life. Money. Hope." Look for more info later this week. Be sure to invite a friend with you this Sunday. This is going to be a great series that you and your friends will not want to miss! See you Sunday!

Saturday Scripture

Friday Favorites

Providence

God is reminding me these days of His leadership in and sovereignty over my life. Proverbs 16:9 says that "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps" (ESV). God's control over my life is a beautiful thing to rely and depend upon.  God is reminding me of His timetable and for accomplishing His purposes in and through me.

The Gospel

Seeing the gospel transform people's hearts, including mine, is a beautiful and powerful thing to see and experience (Romans 1:16-17).

Dodgers

Halfway through the season, my LA Dodgers are in first place in the west and have the best record in baseball. Juan Pierre filled in nicely for Manny Ramirez while he was in timeout for juicing.  However, Manny is back and LA is looking good for a run deep into the postseason this October. 

Happy 500th Johnny!

Calvin500 years ago today John Calvin was born. I am thankful for the influence his writings have had on my life and ministry. Calvin, along with many other theologians of the past, has influenced me greatly. Thanks John for giving us a grand and glorious view of God's greatness. The church needs such a vision of God today. Back to Bloggin'

IMG_2957 We have been really busy as a family lately.  Both boys played All Stars this summer. I was the head coach for Noah's team and an assistant coach for Nathan's squad. Both boys team finished well, with both boys playing really well. Between my role at RiverTown and my MBA work, we were pretty much slammed. Although it was busy, it was worth it. I got great time with the boys as both a coach and as a dad. It was great for my relationship with them.  It was also great for ministry. We were able to get some great time with some friends from RiverTown, and were also able to spend some time with some unchurched families in an effort to influence them towards Christ.

Taking a Break

DSC04623 Hey guys. Just as I got started with the blogging, life happened. All Stars will be happening the next month and a half for my boys . . . yes both boys. I am the head coach for Noah's 8u All Star Team, and an assistant coach for Nate's 10u All Star Team. A friend of mine calls this madness, "PFT" (Pay For Torture) . . . and he maybe right. However, we are entering a very busy season . .. so I am taking a break from blogging. However, I will be back after this insane six weeks is up.  See you then!

"Essential Leadership" | HBR

Occasionally in the Wednesday "Leadership Look" posting, I will reference an article from the "Harvard Business Review". I was reading recently an excellent article from Harvard Business Review, entitled "The Essence of Leadership" by Jonathan Byrnes. This is a great article, and I wanted to share it with you.

Here are the highlights from the first part of the article:

What are the essential qualities of an effective leader? Can these be recognized in young people? Can they be developed?

Great leadership seems easy to recognize, and you usually can tell when someone is lacking in leadership qualities. But how do you define it? This is a critical question both for selecting and developing your subordinates, and for developing your own leadership capabilities.

Here's a definition of leadership that has stuck with me: Leaders are "people who leave their footprints in their areas of passion."

Not surprisingly, I heard this definition in a presentation given by the admissions officer and a colleague of hers. And, in fact, this admissions officer was showing leadership by inviting me and others in to talk about admissions profiles: She was taking an already excellent process, and rather than being complacent with it, she was making it even better. She was leaving her footprints in her area of passion.

Some companies have a culture of relentless, almost compulsive, improvement. No matter how good the company is, it should be doing better. It reminds me of a Smithsonian exhibit on American ingenuity, "If We're So Good, Why Aren't We Better?"

By contrast, other companies are smugly stuck in the past. I remember one vice president telling me that his company was doing everything right because "if there were a better way, we would have found it, and we'd be doing it."

The lesson: When you have the lead, step on the gas. After all, that's how you got there.

RiverTown Recap | 05.10.09

Mother's Day is always a fun Sunday. Today was in keeping with that. Here in Jacksonville, the TPC was wrapping up and many of our members and attenders were at the golf tournament.  We also had a bunch of folks out of town for Mom's Day. However, Sunday was still a great time of worship with solid teaching and really good music. God worked in people's lives in exciting ways.

National Day of Prayer

Prayer1 Today is the 58th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer.  As a church, we are called to pray for our church, community and world.  As a citizens of our country, we are called to pray for our nation. As we all know, prayer is incredibly important . . . so much so that is utterly essential. Let’s allow this National Day of Prayer to remind us of the importance of prayer in our own lives and in our church. Here are some thoughts about prayer.
